As part of San Diego Comic Con, Top Shelf has begun to release Motorcycle
Samurai, a new digital series by Chris Sheridan. At just $0.99, this series
makes its home on Comixology and
uses the format and guided view technology to make the story more than just a
regular digital title. Sheridan’s first published work sports an interesting
title and an interesting release format, but is it actually any good?

The story starts in media res, as the titular Motorcycle
Samurai makes her way through the desert with her silent companion Happy.
Stopping in a silent town to get some water, the duo are accosted by The
Hornets, a group of female bandits that are hunting Happy for someone else. After
a fight and a lesson in humility and wisdom, the Motorcycle Samurai and Happy
ride off into the sunset, entering the Badlands.

Chris Sheridan makes a strong debut in what is apparently his
first published work. The quirky story, with a helmeted samurai riding through
the desert on a motorcycle, a silent, masked man, and a female gang, is one
that isn’t quite like anything else in comics. It’s interesting and fun, full
of action, and well-written. The art features vibrant colors and conveys the
action sequences well when coupled with the guided view technology of
ComiXology. The presentation, using the digital platform and guided view, sets
it apart as well, and adds an extra layer to the story, as the transitions help
to move the story in a controlled way.

For just $0.99, there is probably nothing better to be bought
this week. Be sure to go to ComiXology and
pick up the issue. It’s well worth the dollar.
